With seven million residents, Hong Kong is one of the busiest and most modern, as well as one of the most densely populated, cities on earth. Thousands of double-deckers and minibuses, taxis and private vehicles weave bumper-to-bumper through Asia's high-tech metropolis each day. The high traffic density of the city inevitably leads to an extreme level of noise.
Some peace and quiet is now being provided here by noise barriers made of PLEXIGLAS SOUNDSTOP®. One of the largest projects of its type is currently under way 12 kilometers to the northeast in the town of Ma On Shan. By the end of September, approximately 60,000 m2 of PLEXIGLAS SOUNDSTOP® were erected along three-kilometer-long Trunk Road T7 in Ma On Shan. According to Ulf Stülpnagel, Sales Manager at Degussa subsidiary Para-Chemie in Gramatneusiedl, Austria, "This is the largest noise barrier enclosure that we have ever built."
"We have shipped more than 50 containers with around 38,000 m2 for the roof, along with another 19,000 m2 for the walls," Stülpnagel says, providing some indication of the dimensions of the mega-project, which began construction this spring. Polyamide threads for built-in sliver retention were integrated into the noise barriers, which are made of shiny and transparent light-green PLEXIGLAS SOUNDSTOP® GS CC. "In the case of accidents, for example, the threads prevent slivers from falling down," explains Stülpnagel.
To reduce light reflectance, light-green PLEXIGLAS SOUNDSTOP GS® with a satin-finish surface is used to construct the roof area. The success of the walls can be seen, or rather heard: the wall reflects sound waves, thereby substantially reducing the noise level in the residential areas located behind the barrier. And thanks to its excellent weather resistance, the properties of the material remain practically unchanged over the years.
