Convincing Qualities: Furniture made from woven Plexiglas
The ancient art of weaving is interacting with Degussa's innovative PLEXIGLAS®: in Upper Franconia, Germany, this exciting combination is giving rise to eye catching seating furniture, shelves and partition walls. These attractive products aptly reflect Degussa’s vision as specialty chemicals market leader: Everybody benefits from a Degussa product – every day and everywhere.
Barbara Crettaz, Managing Director of the Creation Crettaz GmbH design office, is launching the new furniture collection, complete with woven PLEXIGLAS® strips, designed by the Schütz international weaving studio based in Lichtenfels, Upper Franconia, Germany. Her creative idea, to weave the multifaceted, UV-stable plastic into furniture and outdoor applications, has been put into practice in individual pilot pieces by the Innovation Centre of the German Weaving Craft Centre in Lichtenfels. The furniture items will be featured prominently at the International Furniture Fair (IMM) held in Cologne between January 17 and 23, 2006.

4-millimeter thick PLEXIGLAS® sheets are cut into strips, thermoformed and woven by hand. This creates elements that are light, but at the same time tough and stiff. In this process, and as required, the designers make the most of the additional characteristics of different PLEXIGLAS® products: transparency, soundproofing or heat-protection. The broad palette of colors offered by PLEXIGLAS SATINICE® creates ample scope for creative ideas using the interplay of light and shade. In the case of PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP®, the woven objects give off a shimmering reddish violet color in the light.
The Innovation Centre of the German Weaving Craft Center in Lichtenfels (Registered Society) is cooperating closely with design and architecture colleges. At the Center’s exhibition rooms Degussa's PLEXIGLAS® is not only featured in furniture creations: sliding covers made from woven, UV-resistant PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® have been installed as sun-shields in front of the exhibition's windows.
