ISO 14001 Certification for Degussa Corporate Center

Ranking among the first in the chemicals industry, the Degussa Corporate Center has been certified in accordance with the ISO 14001 environmental standard. In March 2005, the Board resolved to have the environmentally relevant areas of the Corporate Center inspected according to the same criteria applied to other areas of the Group. In view of its controlling and steering functions, the Corporate Centre has a global influence on all environment-relevant departments of the specialty chemical market leader. At the beginning of February, the independent auditor Gerling Cert Umweltgutachter GmbH presented the certificate to Degussa CEO Prof. Dr. Utz-Hellmuth Felcht. "We can be proud of the fact that our Corporate Center ranks as one of the first to be certified!" was how Felcht assessed the result.

All areas of the Corporate Center were inspected that are concerned with environmental protection itself, the presentation of environmental issues outside the company, the implementation of financial resources as well as the compliance with environmental legislation. Prof. Walter Tötsch, the Degussa board delegate and internal coordinator of the audit, highlights the advantages that Degussa can reap from the certification: "Our processes and interfaces have become more transparent. There are measurable environmental targets for the Group as a whole and we are now better able to document the success of our efforts."

The International Organization for Standardization established ISO 14001 in 1996 as a worldwide standard for environmental management systems in companies and organizations. These guidelines and standards allow environmental burdens to be systematically recorded and the environmental situation to be improved in an ongoing and sustainable manner. Independent, accredited certification bodies perform regular audits to ensure the implementation of all respective requirements. Over 4000 companies and organizations in Germany are currently certified according to ISO 14001.
